And now we are eight...

I wish A.A. Milne had written a book for every year.
John is now eight. He wanted to go bowling, and so, we did. (Smidge looks sad because it's over, but don't let the expression fool you; they all had a fantastic time.) The boys wore their Official Party Gear: wild print, button-up, short-sleeved shirts.

Also affectionately known around our house as "BBQ Shirts", due to the fact that they're worn to any gathering at which there is food. (The prints hide stains beautifully, by the way.)

For his birthday gift, he wanted one thing, and one thing, only:
A Daisy Red Ryder, lever action BB gun.
(Two things. He also wanted BBs.)
He swore he wouldn't shoot his eye out.
This is our little Jeremiah Johnson, our little Lucas McCain. He had the manual out and read, cover-to-cover, before I could get the waffles made. We knew the wait between getting his present in the morning and waiting for Dad to get off work to shoot it would make the day miserably long, so we took it with us into town and after bowling and lunch, we hit the range. As you can see, here, even a low-flying military helicopter (which had Smidge entranced) couldn't distract him from the task at hand. Not even for a second.
Since Friday evening, he's been down by the balcony, working his own homemade range. Almost 2000 BBs have winged their way into the target. Zorak just told me John got a blister on his hand from working the lever. This is one contented, happy little marksman. And he's growing up into a fine young man, indeed.
Happiest of Birthdays, Sweet John! We love you, and are so proud of you.
Kiss those babies!

I have been waiting to see John's photos with his prized possession and am not disappointed. They capture his seriousness when he is doing something important.
John reminds me more of Ward every year.

Happy Birthday, John!

I had to smile that he read the manual so quickly! I gave Evan something to shoot with for his b-day (my camera) and he read the manual right away (which I never did when it was mine).

Happy birthday, John! What a great present. I love the pictures of him using it, what a great experience for him. Isn't it wonderful to live somewhere where he can set up his own range and practice?

Aw, happy birthday, John!

Once upon a time Josh wanted to have his birthday at the bowling alley--and he got a Daisy Red Ryder BB gun. I think it may have been his 8th. Somewhere around there. One of Caleb's favorite birthdays was at the gun range. Sniff, sniff.

Eight is such a fabulous year. Happy Birthday, John!
And what a great gift. That is the coolest BB gun ever! I'm sure he'll get way more hours of enjoyment out of it than any store-bought toy.

Loved the pictures! Looks like bowling was a blast. We love bowling around here too. So much fun, and many opportunities to laugh.
Enjoy your week!

Happy Birthday John!

We are also a Red Ryder family - two times over. They make me nervous, but I know the boys love them and are learning to respect and use guns properly. Jeremy made a beeline for his gun once when we had a strange dog in the yard, tormenting our dogs. He immediately went into "protector" mode, which was pretty cool to see at the ripe old age of 8! ;)
